The right pair of shoes are important. I like cute sandals and high heels but I wouldn’t want to wear them if I were mowing the lawn, running a long distance or in a battle. There is a time for fashion and a time to be practical.
The Roman empire knew this. Footwear played a major role in establishing the Roman Empire. The Roman soldier wore sandals with hobnails in the soles. This helped them traverse rough and hard terrain and traveled during adverse weather condition. Their footwear was essential as they conquered lands.
Friends, we are in a battle and we need to don the right pair of shoes. Paul suggests we wear shoes that help us quickly share the gospel of peace.
The spikes in the Roman sandals gave them stability when the terrain became rough. Life is hard sometimes. Disappointments come, storms rage, but our soles and our souls are firmly anchored in peace. Our quietness, our rest in difficult situations will speak volumes about our God. Others will see our peace and wonder how do you stay so calm? Because our feet are anchored in the rock.
The Roman shoes were also offensive. In hand to hand combat, the soldiers would kick their opponents with their nailed pierced shoes, inflicting damage. We too get to kick our opponent, the enemy, with our feet of peace. His desire is to keep us anxious, fearful, fighting amongst ourselves. He hates it when we act like our daddy. But we put on our shoes of peace and refuse to allow anxiousness and worry to enter our hearts. We refuse offense and decline to get in battles with others. With our shoes of peace we push back the kingdom of darkness and expand the Kingdom of God. This is how we fight! We stand firm in the peace of God.
“Stand on your feet alert, then you’ll always be ready to share the blessings of peace.”
