We are encouraged, no commanded to guard our thought life. We have no business meditating on offenses, worrying about tomorrow, stressing over today or lamenting over yesterday. We must allow grace, love, and peace to write the narrative that is playing in our heads.
Now, this is of vital importance. Because we are warring against a real enemy and he likes to play mind games. He likes to sow seeds of doubts, seeds of envy, seeds of disunity, seeds of hopelessness. He likes to write narratives that gets us to take our eyes off God and get us to focus on our perceived lack, on others shortcomings. His goal is to get us to doubt God, doubt God has equipped us or get us to accuse each other.
How do we fight?
1. Recognize we are not fighting flesh and blood. Your nemesis is never human. Therefore your human weapons of debate and defend will not work.
2. Know the spiritual weapons we have – prayer, God’s Word, faith, peace, hope, love – are powerful and effective. Strong enough to win every battle.
3. We take EVERY thought that is contrary to the character of God captive. Meaning, when a thought pops into your head that causes you to worry, to doubt God, to take offense with someone, you immediately begin to declare truth of who you are, truth of who God is, and truth about who God is in the person offending you. The enemy comes in with one narrative, you write and meditate on a better God-centered narrative.
This is important people! Good, faithful Christians who love Jesus fall prey to the lies of the enemy everyday. Divorce begins with lies of the enemy. Churches split because of the enemy’s mind games. Destinies are thwarted because we partner with his lies. No guilt. No condemnation. But today, let’s choose to be victorious in our thought life. Let us take every arrogant thought that arises up against the knowledge of God captive and then torture that thought by making it listen to truth about God. Let’s win the battle in our minds today!
“For though we live as human beings, we do not wage war according to human standards, for the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, but are made powerful by God for tearing down strongholds. We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ. We are also ready to punish every act of disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete.”
