Oh, the tongue.
It is one of the most powerful weapons we have.
It can be used to build or tear down
Encourage or discourage.
Empower or deflate.
Bless or curse.
Give thanks or complain.
It’s the source of both life and death.
According to James, man is incapable of taming our tongue.
So how do we use this mighty weapon for good and not evil? How do we encourage, empower, bless, bring life with our tongue? How do we get our tongue to cooperate with God?
Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Maybe taming our tongue starts with allowing the love of God to eradicate our fears, our hurts, our insecurities, our prejudgments. Maybe we start with just meditating on the love of God and asking God to give us a greater revelation of His love.
James said, “No man can tame the tongue.”
Man may not be able to control the tongue but the Holy Spirit can. Pray this with me:
“Holly Spirit, I give you my tongue today. Prompt me to bless others with my words today. Give me words of wisdom, encouragement, empowerment. Let me speak life over everyone I encounter today. Let me wait to hear from you before I speak. Open my eyes to see the heart of others. Open my ears to hear what the Father is speaking over others and let me come into agreement with that with my words. Today prompt and empower me to prophesy, speak words that heal, comfort, brings freedom. Today, let me be your mouthpiece. Overflow my heart with the extravagant love of God. Let my mouth speak out of that abundance.”
“We all fail in many areas, but especially with our words. Yet if we’re able to bridle the words we say we are powerful enough to control ourselves in every way, and that means our character is mature and fully developed.”
James (Jacob) 3:2 TPT
