Before reading my Bible this morning, I scrolled through Facebook. (I’ll pause so all of my pious readers can give a collective gasp.)
But I quickly grew weary of the current debate on Facebook: Open up the Government vs. The Risk of the virus is still great.
So I opened my bible app and it went directly to Psalm 107. If you read Psalm 107, two themes are repeated throughout:
1. “Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He delivered them out of their distresses.”
2. “Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
And as I read Psalm 107, I couldn’t help but think, “This IS the answer to the debate.” Now, I know I’m going to offend some of you when I say this, so l apologize in advance, but both sides are rooted in fear.
Open up the government proponents fear loosing civil liberties, fear an economic downfall from which we can’t recover, fear of losing our way of life. All valid concerns.
Keep everyone safe proponents fear a repeat of the bubonic plaque, they fear lives being lost, they fear we don’t have the resources to care for the sick. Again valid concerns.
And I’m not here to debate either side. I’m hear to remind you of the theme in Psalm 107. “Cry out to the Lord and allow him to deliver us from our distress.”
1. He satisfies the thirsty soul.
2. He brings us out of darkness and the shadow of death.
3. He sends His Word to heal us.
4. He calms the storm.
5. He changes wilderness into a pool of water.
6. He blesses and multiplies us. He does not let us decrease.
These are the promises of God and they are true regardless to whether I am quarantined or not. And because they are true, I will operate in the 2nd theme: I will give thanks to the Lord for all of His wondrous works. I will testify of His goodness as the debate rages. I will offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and tell of His works with joyful singing.
Friends, advocate for what you believe. Debate on Facebook. But just remember regardless to whether the government is opened or closed, there is no need to fear. God’s arms are always opened. The heavens are opened. God’s resources are never ending. He provides generously to his children. He delivers us from our distresses. Oh that we would praise Him!
