Within in two chapters (not sue of the time span but within 10 years) God spoke the promise to Abraham three times. In his latest reiteration of the promise, God had Abraham do three things. As God speaks promises to us, it is helpful for us also to do these things as well:
1. See it. God told Abraham he would give him as much of the land as he could see. When God speaks a promise, use your imagination and begin to see it. See yourself doing what God has promised you would do, going where He said you would go, living the life He said you would have. You can’t go where you can’t see! See yourself walking in your promised land.
2. Claim it. Abraham was instructed to physically walk the land. The Bible promises that wherever our feet tread, the ground is ours to take. In this prophetic act, Abraham was claiming what God had promised. We may not be able to physically walk our promised land, but we can claim our land by declaring and decreeing what God has promised. When our words come into agreement with the promise, our heart will follow and eventually our actions.
3. Live It. Abraham pitched a tent in the middle of what had been promised. At this time, it was Abraham, Sarah, and their servants, not exactly the multitude promised. Abraham didn’t wait to see it all before he took a step of faith. He didn’t wait for Sarah to conceive before he believed. He worshipped (built an altar) before any of the promise was fulfilled. When God gives us a promise, we begin to live as if it is true. We do not despise small beginnings. Like Abraham, we take steps toward the promised land trusting God to reveal more as we step and worshipping Him throughout the journey.
There are promises over my life that I have yet to see come to pass. Do you have any? Join me as I begin to imagine myself living the promise, claiming my promises, and living like it’s already done. I’m excited to see how His promises will unfold over my life and yours.
“The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you.” Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to the LORD.”
