Recently, I lost some weight. As a result, I had to get rid of my former clothes and buy new ones. Before I lost the weight, my former clothes were comfortable but now they were uncomfortable because I was constantly pulling on them or making sure nothing was showing. I remember one day praising God with one hand while holding up my jeans with the other.
This Christian life can be like a person on a weight loss journey. We are constantly loosing spiritual baggage, which requires we put on new spiritual clothing. Sometimes that old baggage is comfortable, we have worn it for years. And you may find yourself like me that day, praising God with one hand while holding on to old attitudes, and thought patterns that no longer fit you with the other.
But as new creatures in Christ, it’s time for a new wardrobe.
Let’s take off unforgiveness and put on a heart that forgives.
Remove sexual immorality and clothe ourselves with His righteousness.
Let’s exchange greed for gratitude.
It’s time to box up and throw away anger, malice, filthy language, lying and layer ourselves in compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience.
And finally, let us put on love as our outer garment so that the whole world can view the new, more slender, more beautiful us.
The temptation will rise to dress like your former self. To rummage through old clothes when circumstances get difficult and put on “comfort” clothes that no longer fit. But remember, you are a new creation. You are not who you were. Those clothes do not look good on you (they never did). You are Holy, Chosen, and Dearly Loved. Dress like who you are!
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
Colossians 3:12 NIV
