David is at his lowest point. He had spent years living in a cave, leading a group of misfits, he felt abandoned by his nation and he has made alliances with his enemies only to be rejected by them. He returns home and found everything was gone. His wives, his children, his possessions. Everything gone. The men who had been with him through all of this, have now also turned on him and want to stone him.
David is alone. Heartbroken. Scared. Disillusioned. Discouraged. Have you ever been there? Have you ever been in a season when it seems everything is going awry and despite your best efforts it seems all is falling apart?
Do what David did: stop and find strength in the Lord YOUR God.
David had to ignore the voices of his men screaming at him, accusing him, threatening him, demanding action. I imagine David, as chaos swirled all around him with his lyre in hand singing quietly, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He leads me beside still waters. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name sake. Surely His goodness and His mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” I imagine a great calm and a peace fell on David while he experienced the most difficult trial of his life.
What voices are screaming at you today? Ignore the voice of the enemy accusing you, the doctor’s bad news, the bill collector’s threats, the voice of hopelessness, the voice demanding action. Get still and quietly sing of His goodness. Remind yourself of who He is, of His faithfulness, His goodness, His majesty. Find strength in the Lord your God.
“David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.”
