There lived a man who had five beautiful daughters, no sons. Unfortunately the man died before reaching the promised land which meant his daughters would have no inheritance, for in this culture, women could not inherit land.
What were these women to do? Five women with no father or brother to protect them. Five women living in a society where women were treated like property, denied basic rights, and thought to be subservient. Five women who were denied an inheritance simply because of their gender.
But these women would change the laws of Israel forever. I’m sure it took great boldness, great conviction to go before God’s representative and ask for their inheritance. To petition Moses was a job for the man of the house. Women had no right, no authority to go before God but they went anyway. The stakes were too high. Their future was at stake and so boldly these women asked Moses for their inheritance.
The book of James tells us, “we have not because we ask not.” Asking can be difficult because no one wants to hear, “no”. We don’t want to be rejected. We may even timidly approach God, because we don’t want to be disappointed. So we ask not.
But we should let these women be our example. We should boldly go before our Father and ask for our inheritance. Ask for the desires of your heart. Ask on behalf of your children. Ask. Because of their boldness, not only were these women granted their inheritance but they paved the way for other women to inherit theirs. So remember, you are not just asking for yourself, but you are asking for future generations.
Today, let us go boldly into the presence of our Father and ask for the desires of our hearts.
“And you must tell the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you must transfer his inheritance to his daughter;”
