Is this a sin? I get asked that question all the time. Are gambling, R-rated movies, using profanity activities forbidden for the Christian? And while we are on the subject, do we still need to obey the 10 commandments. After all, we are no longer under the law.
So let me just answer this question once and for all.
1. You are forgiven. You are holy and blameless in His eyes. Your forgiveness is unconditional and flows generously from the cross. You are the righteousness of God and sin is no longer your master.
2. Jesus gave us one commandment: to love one another. If you love you will not murder, be jealous, lie, cheat on your spouse. Love spurs us to honor our parents. If we love one another we organically uphold the 10 commandments. It is no longer a rule I follow, it’s just who I am.
3. “Is this a sin?” is not the right question we should ask as believers. The two questions we should ask are: “Is this edifying?” And “what is God speaking to me about this?”
First, Everything that is legal is not edifying. Our goal should be to engage in activities that build us and others up, that feed our spirit, and encourages our faith.
Secondly, we are each on an individual journey. Because of the calling on your life, or because of the tender nature of your heart, there may be certain activities God may cause you to abstain from. We must be obedient to His voice in that area. However, we must also remember that mandate from God is specific to us and not condemn or judge others who partake.
So did I answer your question? I hope I didn’t. Because it a personal question between you and the Father. Spend some time with Him today and allow Him to lead you into all truths.
“Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to conduct ourselves rightly in every respect.”
