The Challenge – Week 7 Day 3

The disciples had just seen Jesus calm a storm, heal a man oppressed by many demons, raise a dead child, and a woman healed simply because she touched Jesus’ clothing with faith.

And then Jesus turned to His disciples, His students and said, “I am deputizing you (giving you the right) and equipping you (giving you the power) to go and do all that you have seen me do – set the oppressed free, heal the sick, raise the dead, and preach the gospel.”

Apparently they followed Jesus’ instructions. They went out and performed miracles. But when they got back from their “mini-missions trip”, they forgot about their supernatural resources, their power and authority over lack. When Jesus instructed them to feed 5000, they considered only their natural resources. They didn’t recognize it was a different problem but the same God.

I just got back from a “mini-missions trip.” I saw and participated in people healed, the oppressed set free, the Kingdom of God preached. I was on a “mission”; intentionally looking for the sick, the hurting, the downcast. I was ready to use the authority and power I’ve been given to demonstrate the Love of God.

But like the disciples, I returned home excited, eager to share what I had seen and done but I forgot that as a disciple, a student of Jesus, I am forever on a “mission.” I must be just as intentional at work, at the store, in my neighborhood as I was in Mexico. Jesus’ command to go includes my everyday life. The power and authority I’ve been given does not increase when I travel abroad, I have the same power and authority here as I had in Mexico.

We are students of Jesus. We have power and authority over ALL demons and to heal the sick. Jesus is sending us to preach the gospel and heal the sick. He is sending us to our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends. We are on a mission and that mission begins right here, right now.

“Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”
