Old Testament:
““You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins.”” Amos 3:2 NIV
New Testament:
“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” I John 2:1-2 NKJV
Propitiation, that’s my new word this season. It means not only to make amends for a wrong act but also to appease the anger of the person offended.
So Jesus appeased the wrath of God on our behalf. And not just for Christians but for the whole world. What does that mean?
It is an Old Testament mindset to think God is sending natural disasters to punish us. He is no longer angry with us. Paul tells us we ALL deserve to be objects of His wrath but because of His great love, He sent Jesus to appease that wrath (Romans 2:3-7).
So stop blaming a Good God for bad acts.
He is not angry with you.
He is not sending sickness or disease your way to teach you a lesson.
He is not ordering up earthquakes to punish California.
He is not flooding New Orleans because they didn’t learn their lesson the last time.
You can blame corrupt politicians, the Fall, the devil…But why worry about blame at all? Once we know it’s not from God, take authority over the situation and declare God’s three R’s – Resurrection, Redemption, and Restoration – are at work in your situation.
God is no longer angry with us. Meditate on that!
