The debate rages on amongst women: Are you a Mary or a Martha? I don’t particularly care for the question. First, because I don’t like to be put in a box and reduced to a stereotype and secondly because I feel it divides us pitting our strengths against each other.
In life, both Martha and Mary are necessary. You can’t have a Mary without a Martha to plan the party. Without Marthas, our world would be chaotic. Without Marys our world would sterile.
I have days in my life when I am very much a Martha – goal oriented with a to-do list. Stay out of my way.
There are days when I’m a Mary. Dishes in the sink, laundry in the basket and I’m sitting in front of the fireplace, sipping hot chocolate in my Daddy’s lap.
Both days are necessary.
But this holiday season, I want to encourage you to find your inner “Mary.” We can get so focus on preparing the perfect meal, buying the perfect gift, decorating the perfect tree, throwing the perfect party we can forget what is truly important. Allow Jesus’ words to Martha to guide you this Christmas season:
“Martha, my beloved Martha. Why are you upset and troubled, pulled away by all these many distractions? Are they really that important? Mary has discovered the one thing most important by choosing to sit at my feet. She is undistracted, and I won’t take this privilege from her.”” Luke 10:41-42 TPT
I know things must get done. The dishes must be washed, the laundry eventually folded, presents purchased, tree trimmed but take the time and have a ‘Mary’ Christmas. In the midst of the chaos, remember to stop, drink from His cup, sit in Daddy’s lap and breathe. It is the most important thing this season and every season.
Have a Mary Christmas everyone!
