Child or slave? Who are you?
Most of us would correctly answer, I’m a son or I’m a daughter. But is that just head knowledge or has it become heart knowledge? The test is, how do we pray?” Do we pray as if we are children or do we pray like slaves?
Do we timidly approach God, as if He is a hardened taskmaster who is looking for perfection? Do we feel the need to beg God, twist His arm, perform perfectly so that maybe, if He is in a good mood, He will give us crumbs from the table. When we mess up, do we hide from Him, waiting for Him to exact punishment?
Or do we go boldly as children to His throne of grace. Do we run into His loving arms, laugh with Him, sing with Him, ask Him to dance with us? Do we ask for the impossible, for the outrageous because He is our Dad who performs the impossible and is outrageously generous. Can we freely go to Him when have made our biggest mistake, knowing we will find grace; knowing we will find a loving father who will kiss our boo boos and make it all better?
Child or slave? How will you approach God today. I’ve tried both. Yes, He will meet you where you are but I can testify, child is so much more fun.
“But when the appropriate time had come, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we may be adopted as sons with full rights. And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, who calls “ Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if you are a son, then you are also an heir through God.”
