Why Are You Afraid?

“Let’s go to the other side,” Jesus commanded. In their going, in their obedience, in their following directions, a storm arose. (Just because you are doing what God has told you to do, doesn’t mean you won’t encounter a storm or two. It just means you know the storm is temporary.)

At this point in their “disciple” careers, they had seen a man cleansed of leprosy, a man’s hand restored, and a paralyzed man walk. They had seen demon’s cast out, many healed and heard the good news preached with power.

But when the storm was upon them, when their lives were in danger, they forgot all they had learned and they feared. Now I’m not calling the disciples out this morning. I believe this story is there for all of us who have seen God do the miraculous, who have stood on words and saw them come to pass but then a new storm arises and we fear. This story is written for me.

Yes, I have seen the miraculous. Yes, I am a walking Testament of God’s goodness and faithfulness. Yet, still when the storm arise, my first thought is “What am I going to do?” That thought is based in fear. While it may be my first thought, it must be a fleeing thought. I must remind myself that the same Jesus who cleaned the leper, healed the shriveled hand, and caused the lame to walk is the same Jesus in the storm, the same Jesus that lives within me.

Are you in the storm? Are you questioning Jesus’ love? Are you afraid? Awaken the Jesus within you! Speak to the storm. Silence the lies and continue doing what God has called you to do. Don’t let fear rule you.

“He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?””
‭‭Mark‬ ‭4:40‬ ‭NIV‬‬
